Abstract (EN)
This study aims to analyze a total of 14 fairy tales found in 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8thgrade Turkish textbooks prepared by the Ministry of National Education (MEB) Publications and private publishers, within the framework of Marshall Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communication (NVC) model. The research was conducted using document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods; the communication styles of the characters in the fairy tales were evaluated in terms of the four core components of NVC: observation, feeling, need, and request. The dialogues and character behaviors in the examined fairy tales were classified and coded according to these components, and the obtained data were supported with frequency tables. The findings of the research revealed that the fairy tale characters predominantly included the feeling and need components in their communication; in contrast, observation and clear request expressions remained limited. This deficiency was identified as one of the primary reasons for communication blockages and conflicts among the characters. In conclusion, the analysis indicates that these fairy tales have the potential to be a resource that can indirectly impart the principles of nonviolent communication to students. The study concludes with the suggestion that, for the purpose of developing communication skills in Turkish education, the components of the NVC model should be taken into account in text selection and language instruction.
