Cognitive stimulation therapy based on Roy's adaptation model on the coping-adjustment, cognitive functions and quality of life of individuals with dementia

The objective of the study was to determine the effect of "Cognitive Stimulation Therapy" based on Roy's Adaptation Model on the coping-adjustment, cognitive functions and quality of life of individuals with dementia. The study population consists of dementia patients at the Akdeniz University Neurology polyclinic. The study is a randomized controlled study designed in the experimental type using a single blind pre-test, post-test pattern. Individuals are assigned to intervention and control groups with simple randomization method. The study was carried out with 60 dementia patients with 30 in the intervention and 30 in the control groups. The application stage of the study was carried out at the Social and Healthy Life Association. Data was acquired via socio-demographic and disease history information form, Coping and Adjustment Period Scale, Standardized Mini Mental Test and Quality of Life in Alzheimer's Disease Scale. Cognitive Stimulation Therapy based on Roy's Adaptation Model was applied to the intervention group. The data were evaluated using t test, Mann Whitney U test and Wilcoxon signed rank test. It was determined as a result of the study that the coping-adjustment, cognitive function and quality of life levels of the intervention group patients subject to Cognitive Stimulation Therapy based on Roy's Adaptation Model were higher in comparison with the coping-adjustment, cognitive function and quality of life levels of the individuals in the control group. It was observed that the Cognitive Stimulation Therapy applied based on Roy's Adaptation Model had a positive effect on the coping-adjustment, cognitive function and quality of life of light and moderate stage dementia patients. Cognitive Stimulation Therapy applied based on Roy's Adaptation Model dementia cognitive functions, the quality of life and coping-compliance of individuals, to be used as nursing practices in improving is recommended.
