Investigation of serum TWEAK and TRAIL levels in Rosacea patients

Abstract (EN)

Objective: Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory facial dermatosis clinically characterized by skin manifestations of erythema, papules, pustules and phymatous lesions. Genetics, immune factors, neurovascular irregularity, microorganisms and environmental factors are thought to play a role in the development of the disease, but the pathogenesis of rosacea is not fully understood. TWEAK and TRAIL are two cytokines thought to have a role in the pathogenesis of some inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. In our study, we aimed to examine the levels of TWEAK and TRAIL in patients with rosacea. Materials and methods: Forty rosacea patients who applied to the Inonu University Medical Faculty Dermatology outpatient clinic and were diagnosed with rosacea and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were included in the study. Clinical examinations of the patients were performed. An anamnesis containing information such as age, gender, duration of disease, and previous treatments was obtained. TWEAK, TRAIL and oxidative stress markers were studied in serum samples taken from the patient and control groups. In addition, fasting blood sugar, HDL, LDL, total cholesterol, triglyceride, CRP, troponin I values of the patients were measured. Results: TWEAK and TRAIL levels did not differ statistically in the patient and control groups. Although TRAIL levels were not statistically significant, they were found to be lower in the patient group compared to the control group. Both TWEAK and TRAIL levels in patients resulted in higher levels in males than females. Conclusion: TWEAK and TRAIL may not have a systemic effect in rosacea, unlike other inflammatory diseases. Further studies are needed to investigate the role of TWEAK and TRAIL in rosacea.
