Ways of word formation in Russian

ABSTRACTOur study ?Ways of word formation in Russian? is prepared as amaster-degree thesis. In this thesis, ways of word formation in Russian isinvestigated both morphologically and semantically.In the first section of our thesis ?Morphological way of word formation? ,after a brief information about word formation and morphology is given, thebasic units of word formation system in the Russian language are stated.Terms used in word formation in Russian, groups of cognate words, therelationships between words are stated.While the ways of word formation are explained, prefixes and suffixesare presented with their meanings. Productive affixes which are being usedfor new word formation are determined and examples of derived words bythese affixes are stated. As known; word derivation is not done only byadding some affixes to roots but also there are other ways of word derivation;for this reason, methods like word derivation by compounding, abbreviationand affixless word derivation are also metioned.In the second section of our thesis ?Semantic way of word formation?,synonyms, antonyms and homonyms are grouped as basic and derivedwords considering the grammar of Russian. Semantic changes in Russianlanguage (narrowing, widening of meaning) are investigated, past times arereferred to see these changes. Changes in words are observed as a result ofchanges in people?s value judgments. Words used in Soviet and Postsovietperiods are investigated semantically. It is shown that morphological andsemantical ways of word formation in Russian are related with each other.
