Abstract (EN)
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Chronic renal failure is a process which is characterized by permanent loss of renal functions, followed by inflammation and oxidative stress and treated with RRT. Inflammation and cardiovascular mortality are in close relationship in patients who received RRT. Recently MHO is shown to be a new possible marker of inflammation with a possible relation with cardiovascular mortality. Aim of this study is to compare the MHO in patients who received HD or PD as RRT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 47 end-stage renal failure patients, who were treated with RRT at Nephrology Clinics of Afyon Kocatepe University Medical Faculty Hospital, were enrolled in this study. Patients were divided into two groups according to their treatment modalities as HD or PD. Absolute monocyte counts and mean HDL cholesterol levels of the patients were collected with a minimal interval of 3 months. MHO was compared within two groups. IBM SPSS Statistics 22.0 (IBM Corp. NY. USA) was used in the analysis of the data. All p values were two-way, and values equal or less than 0.05 (p<0.05) were accepted as significant. FINDINGS: When patient demographics were analyzed, median distribution of the parameters of age and gender were found to be similar (p>0.05). There was no significance regarding the etiology of end-stage renal failure in patients at HD and PD groups (p>0.05). When complete blood counts of the patients were compared to each group MCV was found to be significantly higher in HD group (p=0.025). Other complete blood count parameters were found to be similar. When lip parameters were compared HDL cholesterol was found to be significantly higher in PD group (p=0.036). Regarding other lipid parameters no difference was observed. Monocyte/HDL cholesterol ratio in HD patients was significantly higher in HD patients (p=0.028). RESULTS: Monocyte/HDL cholesterol ratio was found to be significantly higher in HD patients compared to PD group. Finding a difference in MHO between two similar groups regarding classical atherosclerosis risk factors, showed a possible contribution of this parameter to atherosclerosis formation and progression. This study is important to be the first in the literature to have the comparison of MHO in RRT's.
