Design and determination of efficiency of vertical axis wind turbine with shutters capable open and close under the effect of wind

The increasing energy demand in the world and the protocols signed by countries due to environmental factors have increased the tendency towards renewable energy sources. The data in the 2024 report of IRENA proves this. Thanks to the projects developed especially for the use of wind energy at sea and on land; a significant increase has been achieved in the use of wind as an energy source. In order to use the energy coming from the wind more, there should be wind turbine applications in cities as well as wind power plants in large areas. For this purpose, the widespread use of vertical axis and small-scale wind turbines will provide greater utilization of wind. In this context, the vertical axis wind turbine with opening and closing blades (shutters wing) that we have developed has 3 blades, unidirectional opening blades on the blades; It has structural features that can operate with higher efficiency compared to existing vertical axis wind turbines. The amount of torque produced at each wind speed was calculated on the turbine where experimental studies were carried out at 3 different wind speeds. The obtained data were compared with the values obtained as a result of theoretical calculations and the turbine efficiency was revealed. When the results were evaluated; the efficiency for the turbine, which was manufactured and experimentally studied within the available possibilities, was found to be around 15% at a wind speed of 4.2 m/s. It was determined that the efficiency decreased in case of high wind speeds. According to the simulation analysis, it was determined that the turbine efficiency can increase to 23% - 29%.
