Abstract (EN)

The set-up and application of the 3rd generation spectral wave model ?SWAN to the Bay of Izmir, chosen due to the dynamic socio-economic situation and rapidly developing industrial region hosting one of the important ports of Turkey. The importance of the taken measures both in the hard and soft sense; lead the bay for a recovery period which shows a positive demand for the last couple of years. On the other hand navigation in the Bay suffers from the draft and due to the difficulties in the navigation of higher DWT ships. While this situation necessitates to take some monitoring and precautionary measures for preventing further shoaling, besides the demand on alternative service facilities for further development and management of the port and the bay resources without exhausting the sources, highly incorporates with precision of the sea state and climate predictions within the region and the interaction with the sourcing Aegean Sea waters. A comprehensive study on the available wind and wave data from satellite altimeter, scatterometer missions and assimilated wind series data (ERA-40) have been conducted, to identify a pattern for the region on monthly and yearly basis. To identify realistic boundary and forcing wind field conditions wind speed and direction data from the closest meteorological station located at Çiğli covering 2000-2010 have been analyzed. With the derived wind speeds and the direction analysis results a fetch length study has been deployed with SPM-CERC methodology. The state of the art wave model SWAN which describes the evolution of a two dimensional wave energy spectrum in coastal regions, lakes and estuaries where the evolution of the spectrum is calculated from given wind, seabed and flow conditions, have been utilized for the bay's wave condition analysis and running predefined scenarios. Tsunami model Nami Dance also utilized for a scenario and the outcomes presented in this research.
