Production of foam material from chabazite and clinoptilolite and its characterization

Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, physical and mechanical properties of foam materials which are obtained by using natural chabazite, natural clinoptilolite samples and foaming materials are investigated.In the experimental studies, natural chabazite and klinoptilolite samples are obtained from Bala-Ankara and Manisa-Gördes, Balıkesir-Bigadiç, respectively. Natural klinoptilolite samples are modified by 1M Ca-, Mg-, Na-, K-chloride solutions. Firstly, mineralogical and chemical contents of natural and modified samples are determined by XRD, XRF. Obtained results are confirmed by SEM images.Thermal characterizations of natural and modified zeolite samples are determined by using TG-DTA and thermal microscope techniques. Moreover, water contents of all samples are determined by TG-DTA analysis while, sintering, softening and fusion temperature of natural and modified samples are determined by thermal microscope. Due to the results of these analysis, it is determined that all natural samples have porous structure at 1200-1300oC without any foaming material.Through these properties of natural zeolites, foaming materials which have high strength and low thermal conductivity are obtained by using SiC which releases gas at high temperatures. Moreover, by using natural zeolite and NaOH or Na2CO3, light materials are obtained at low temperatures.In this thesis, average pour sizes, bulk densities, compressive strengths, bending strengths, acid-base strengths, water absorpsion capacities, thermal conductivities of obtained porous materials are determined. It is stated that these materials have some superior properties comparing to other thermal insulation materials, it is proposed to use obtained porous materials.
