Humor and value transfer in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series

This study aims to examine the transmission of values through humor in one of the most popular children's literature series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. In contemporary educational paradigms, imparting values to children is regarded as a crucial element that facilitates their social adaptation processes and acceptance of ethical principles. Humor, as a method to capture children's attention and simplify abstract concepts, plays a significant role in literary works, functioning both as an educational tool and a source of entertainment. In this context, the study investigates the functionality of humor in conveying fundamental human and societal values to children and evaluates the impact of these values on their emotional, cognitive, and social development. The study adopts qualitative research methods, employing content analysis to examine the value themes within the series in detail. During the analysis, universal values such as honesty, justice, love, friendship, respect, patience, self-discipline, and patriotism were identified, and how these values are portrayed in the series, the contexts in which they are emphasized, and how the characters represent these values were explored. The findings reveal that the series processes these values using a humorous tone and examples drawn from everyday life, contributing to the internalization of these values by young readers. Notably, the impact of humor in capturing children's attention and facilitating their understanding of abstract values emerged as a prominent finding. According to the results of the study, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series functions not only as an entertaining literary work but also as a pedagogical guide. The plotlines, the conflicts experienced by the characters, and the methods used to resolve these conflicts impart crucial concepts such as empathy, critical thinking, adherence to social norms, and ethical behavior to children. For instance, the theme of honesty is indirectly conveyed through the characters' confrontation with the consequences of their mistakes, emphasizing the importance of being truthful. Similarly, values such as justice, love, and friendship are naturally integrated into the relationships between the characters, with their practical implications illustrated through the stories. The function of humor in the series lies in enabling an indirect and critical learning process rather than directly teaching values through didactic methods. This approach allows children to question the values presented, relate them to their own lives, and learn them in a more enduring manner. The data obtained in the study demonstrate that humor can be used more effectively as an educational tool and that such works offer a rich pedagogical content.
