Evaluation of the transformational leadership characteristics of health managers: A research on a public hospital in Ankara

Transformational leadership is a leadership theory in which a leader works with teams or followers beyond their own personal interests to identify the change needed, creates a vision to guide change through influence, inspiration, and drives the change with committed members of a group. The success of healthcare professionals' practices in healthcare delivery is related to leadership behaviors. Transformational leadership, one of the modern theories, has more positive effects on clinical outcomes. In conclusion; The importance of leadership skills adopted and developed by transformational leadership is inevitable in creating healthy working environments where patient safety is ensured, quality care is provided, and health outcomes are more positive. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the transformational leadership of health policies. For this purpose, the application was carried out in a public hospital operating in Ankara. In the research, Avolio & Bass (2004) and Podsakoff et al. (1996)'s advanced leadership performance questionnaire was used. This research was conducted on 434 people. The population of this program consists of physicians, nurse, midwives and other healthcare professionals working in the public hospital where the research is conducted. Participants were asked to evaluate the transformational leadership characteristics of the managers they worked with. At the end of the study, it has been determined that there is no significant difference in the transformational leadership perceptions of male and female employees, and managerial and non-managerial employees. With this, differences in the education level, age and working hours of healthcare professionals not affect their perception of transformational leadership. Additionally, participants stated that their managers had moderate level transformational leadership qualities.
