Analysis of pulmonary function tests in healthy young male and female individuals

Aim : In this research project study, it is aimed to determine the test results (expiratory vital capacity, inspiratory vital capacity, inspiratory capacity, inspiratory reserve volume, expiratory reserve volume and tidal volume) by spirometry method in healthy young individuals. Material and Method : In this study, volunteers with an average weight of 38 - 95 kg and an average length of 1.57 - 1.90 cm were participated and necessary measurements were made by applying hand spirometry to the volunteers. Descriptive statistics (number, percentage, mean, standard deviation, minimum, maximum values), t-test for comparison of group averages, Paired Samples t for in-group comparisons, through the computer statistics package program. -Test, categorical data were evaluated using chi-square test and Pearson correlation test in numerical continuous data. A p value less than 0.05 was accepted as a statistical significance level. Findings : 53.8% of the participants in the study are men and 46.2% are women, and the mean age standard deviation is 19.8 ± 1.28. While 35.9% of the participants in the study stated that they are still smoking and 50.0% of the men still smoke, this rate was found to be 20.0% for women. Comparison of the whole group in total populations investigated EVC Expected (p = 0.000), IVC Expected (p = 0.000), IC Expected (p = 0.000), ERV Expected (p = 0.000), EVC Found (p = 0.000), IC Found (p = 0.002), ERV Found ( p = 0.000), TV Found (p = 0.066), IC% Expected (p = 0.835), ERV% Expected (p = 0.009) and BMI (p = 0.007) mean standard deviation of respiratory parameters in males to females determined higher than that. The mean standard deviation in terms of EVC% predicted (p = 0.997), Temperature (OC) (p = 0.795), Fahrenheit (OF) (p = 0.795) values were found to be lower in men than in women. The mean pressure values of men (1.07 ± 0.016) were found to be similar to the mean pressure values of women (1.07 ± 0.009) (p = 0.803). Results or Conclusion : In this study, the distribution of lung volume and capacity in individuals was examined and as a result of our spriometric measurement analysis, it was shown that anthropometric values and sociodemographic characteristics can affect respiratory parameters. Vital capacity (IVC and EVC) and tidal volume (TV) results were found to be significantly higher in men than women. At the end of this study, a database on the distribution of lung volume and capacity in healthy individuals was obtained and the results will contribute to the standardization of the tests performed on this subject. This standardization can be used in monitoring the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of lung diseases.
