Integrating virtual reality into visual communication design education

Visual communication design has evolved throughout the ages, the digital revolution not only brought more responsibilities to designers but also brought new mediums for communication. Extended Reality (XR) technologies provided new possibilities for many disciples, however, visual communication design education did not get the best of Extended Reality although they include a high potential for design and creativity, there are a few studies related to using Extended Reality for visual communication design education and there are no educational games in 3D or for Virtual Reality, therefore, this practice-based research used a creation tool to design and develop the world's first educational game for visual communication design education to raise the awareness of the importance of Extended Reality for both the education and profession of visual communication design. The study used mixed methods to collect data from 8 design academics, 5 design practitioners, 2 Virtual Reality developers, and 40 visual communication design students, the results of the educational Virtual Reality game were positive, and the majority of the interviewees asserted that Extended Reality technologies have high potentials for the education and the profession of visual communication design.
