Examination of esoteric symbols in art history: sacred images

This study is a qualitative case analysis that examines the influence of esoteric knowledge throughout the history of art, from cave paintings to contemporary practices. The primary aim of the research is to trace the presence of shared symbols and esoteric meanings in artworks produced across different historical periods and to reveal how these symbols have transformed within their historical and cultural contexts. The study was conducted using the case study method, one of the qualitative research designs. Data were collected through visual and theoretical analyses of artworks, documentary reviews, and printed sources. The findings were interpreted through symbolic readings within the framework of esoteric knowledge. The research evaluates the impact of esoteric elements on art from prehistoric cave paintings through the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, and modern periods. Symbols such as bulls, horns, spirals, and circles were found to carry magical, metaphysical, and intellectual meanings. The use of light and geometric forms in architecture and visual arts was also identified as being shaped by esoteric principles. According to the findings, artists have used esoteric symbols not only for aesthetic purposes but also as tools for intellectual and metaphysical expression. Through these symbols, cosmic and inner meanings have been conveyed via artistic language. This demonstrates that art functions not only as a visual medium but also as a means of knowledge production and transmission. By examining the formal and conceptual influence of esoteric knowledge on artworks from ancient to modern times, this case study highlights the historical continuity of esoteric symbo324relism and the ways in which artists have reinterpreted these symbols. The study offers a theoretical framework for understanding the intellectual depth of art through the lens of esotericism.
