Embroidery applications on canvas in the context of arts and crafts movement

Embroidery art, carrying the cultural structure of the society in which it is positioned, is one of the oldest arts that has survived from the past to the present. It has maintained its existence for long years with a sexist approach which is labeled as "women's business". William Morris has added a new dimension by using the art of embroidery in textile products in order to alter this sexist approach. Morris defended the uniqueness and quality of handicrafts, emphasizing the cheapness and worthlessness of mass-produced products of the industry. The aim of this thesis is to examine the art of embroidery, whose importance has diminished since the beginning of the Indstrial Revolution in Britain in the 19th century, in the light of the Arts and Crafts Movement founded by John Ruskin and William Morris and to reveal the effects of this movement. There are many art movements and artists influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement. In this context, interest in art has increased with new interpretations to art products. Reflections of embroidery art which is considered as the first stage of modern art can be seen in many areas such as clothing, home decoration products, furniture designs, accessories, ceramic art, and wall panels. In the context of the Arts and Crafts movement, original designs were transferred to the canvas based on the method of embroidery applications on canvas. Furthermore, the application is limited to the motifs and patterns in the works. Based on these limitations, the theoretical background of embroidery was examined, and embroidery on canvas was applied based on the effects of Arts and Crafts movement.
