Development of a creativity scale in visual arts

The aim of this study was to determine the indicators of artistic creativity that is related to general creativity. In this regard, an original scale was developed. Thanks to this scale, a measure to address the level of general and artistic creativity among primary school studentswas proposed, and the links across these types of creativity and their subcomponents were investigated. The participants of the study consisted of two samples. The first sample was involved for the development of the scale whereas the second group was involved for the implementation of the scale among participants in Eskişehir. During the process, approximately 850 primary, secondary and science-art centre students took part. In addition to artistic creativity, fluency, flexibility and originality of general creativity were taken into consideration. Validity and reliability analyses of the scale were made through detailed investigations of the studies in the field. During data collection, different measurement pools adressing the fluency, flexibility and originality components of creativity were constructed. Then, the experts discussed and interpreted the results to obtain the final version. They also conducted one–way analysis of variance, multiple comparisons, and correlations to explore developmental validity and relations across components and scores. Thanks to this scale, it is possible to handle general creativity with fluency, flexibility and originality dimensions and artistic creativity with composition, rate–proportion, perspective and originality. Furthermore, the scale questions the connections between general and artistic creativity and their bond with developmental creativity. As a result of the analyses, it was clear that general creativity and artistic creativity had a reasonable relation and their measures both had discriminant validity. Finally, it was also obvious that the higher the class levels the more meaningful was the extent of creativity.
