Abstract (EN)

ivEXPERIENCING SPACE IN ART:WORKS OF INSTALLATION(M.Sc. Thesis)Burcu AYÖZCAN ATALARGAZİ UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYSeptember 2006Art appraises space -the subject matter of architecture- in terms of theinteraction among concepts of subject, object, observer and time, thusintroduces it as a means of aesthetic and conceptual expression. The aim of thisstudy is to examine the experienced spaces originated by art via theseinteractions and observe the distinct spatial experiences introduced by thesespaces.Industralization and serial production techniques are of utmost importance interms of the transformation of the relation between the observer and the workof art. The study undertakes the reflections of this transformation in themedium of art. `Installation art?, deals with one?s perceptual experiences, produces experienced spaces that are not only spectated, but also experiencedvia the togetherness of space, subject, observer and time. While the concepts of experimentation and perception are being matched,Rudolf Arnheim and Christian Norberg-Schulz?s definitions on space areexamined. As a result, works of installation art is exemplified and they are putforward as a study creating `experienced spaces? as a product of space object, observer and time.vThe diverse spatial experiences presented in these studies in the medium ofbuilding space, urban space and natural space are exemplified. Also, the studyclosely examines and exemplifies the concepts of space ,subject, observer andtime in the works of architects Frederick Kiesler and Gordon Matta Clark. All in all, works of installation art designs space - the backbone of architecture-independent of aesthetical necessities, considerations on stability, requirementsof utility, economic restrictions, social responsibilities, ideological orientationand put forward studies creating spaces merely with conceptual and visualintentions. Hence; these studies create opportunities to present different spatialexperiences.Science Code : 802.1.100Key Words : Installation art, Space, Object, Subject, TimePage Number : 132Advisor : Prof .Dr. T.
