Past, present and future of ney making, maintenance and repair workshops in Şanlıurfa

Ney (reed flute or nay) appears as a wind instrument among Turkish music instruments. The Ney's roots in the historical process date from quite old. Today, the Ney is one of the most important instruments used in Turkish Sufi music. In our age, where interaction is increasing day by day, the speed of people seeing an object, being affected by that object and reaching that object has also increased considerably. In this regard, it is possible to say that the same processes are experienced in the Ney instrument. The increase in the demand on the Ney instrument through various interactions has led to a directly proportional increase in the production of the Ney. Therefore, it has been observed that qualified the Ney masters are educated in order to supply the increasing demand for the Ney instruments. It is known that these masters needed workshops for the Ney making in order to create a more serial production and also, operated their own workshops on their own needs. It is possible to say that a Ney workshop contributes to the region in many ways. From this point of view, Şanlıurfa is a city where the Ney instruments can be reached more easily, as it is a city with the Ney workshops. Therefore, the Ney making and repair workshops in Şanlıurfa provide many benefits for those who are associated with the Ney instrument in the region. In this research, the positive and negative aspects of the Ney making and repair workshops in Şanlıurfa were studied to be revealed by considering the processes developed before and after. The research is aimed at determining the situation and has a descriptive structure. During the research process, information on the topic was tried to be obtained by scanning digital and written sources, and then, quantitative and qualitative findings on the topic were obtained to be evaluated by applying personal interviews and survey techniques to the Ney masters and the Ney performers in the region about the past and future of the Ney making and repair workshops in Şanlıurfa. If some of the research results are to be listed, in the process where there were no the Ney making and repair workshops in Şanlıurfa; with the fact that the Ney instrument is more difficult to access in the region and the prices are not affordable, some difficulties appear in the Ney making and repair needs that develop after the imported the Neys, again in this process, the Ney instrument has become less common in the region, with the opening of the Ney making and repair workshops; some of the first results that come to mind are that the Ney instrument is easier to access in the region, and the prices are affordable, and the Ney making and repair needs developing after the Ney are supplied faster, and that the Ney instrument accelerates the process of becoming widespread in this process.
