Structural features of the housing dome in Sanliurfa Harran region

It is understood that, the domed house buildings have been constructed with different materials and technic in different culture and geography for many centuries. Important factor of choosing of these structures are to be built fast with existing materials which are available environment, sustainable and economical. In generally these building types meet a needs for housing and shelter. In fact dome houses which is a construction culture function as a tent. This scope of study, it is understood that there are scientific study on vernacular domed houses in different region, Mediterranean, Aegean and Middle East countries. However, there isn't enough study about used to empty and poorly the remaining of Harran's vernacular domed houses. The domed structure housing within the borders of Turkey, representing the only example of architecture of the buildings in Şanlıurfa Harran region. In this context, the domed houses were examined about structural features and identified damage and deterioration which is occurred in the structure. In the first part of thesis, literature summary of the issues, purpose and hypothesis parts situated. In the second part of thesis, historical evolution of the traditional domed housing has been studied around the world. Also, in different locations especially in Mesopotamia, Iran, the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Aegean countries and Turkey within the boundaries of the factors that led to the emergence of a dome in Harran. It is the only example of architecture housing architecture and structure features, the climate, culture of life and the natural environment factors were examined with local materials. In the third part of thesis, geographical location and climatic characteristics of the region social-economic and cultural structure, history and architectural features of Harran were examined. In the fourth part of thesis, urban and architectural design, building elements, materials and construction techniques and features have been made to identify damage and deterioration that occurred in Harran's domed structure. The result of the thesis, damage and deterioration compiled, and explained suggestions. Thus, faced with the danger of destruction in the region, providing continued presence is intended to contribute to the protection of cultural heritage value Harran dome bearing housing.
