Investigation on some pollution parameters in saricay and Biga stream (Çanakkale) and isolation of nitrite and nitrate bacteria and sulphur oxidizing bacteria

In this study, Saricay and Biga stream of Canakkale province were analized periodically for every month between October 2007 ? September 2008. Samples taken from selected stations in some of the parameters that determine water pollution, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity, pH, temperature, faecal and total coliform were measured. These parameters were compared with the standards and most of them have been found higher than standards.Furthermore, In two streams most probable number of sulphate reducing, denitrificating and ammonifying bacteria by using the multiple tube fermentation technique were also determined. The number of these bacteria offers kind of polluting substances and size of the pollution in Saricay and Biga streams. According to these results Saricay and Biga streams were found contaminated with domestic, industrial and animal- derived pollutants.In addition to these some nitrite and nitrate bacteria which providing nitrification at streams and the group of Thiobacillus sp., which oxidize sulphur were also isolated.
