Persarmenia in the Sasanian Period

In this study, the boundaries of the geography called Persarmenia in classical period sources were tried to be determined. After the Romans conquered the Anatolian geography, after the invasion of some parts of the Armenia lands, the Armenia lands that remained in the hands of the Iranians were called Persarmenia. After a while, the lands of Armenia were officially shared between Romans and Iranians. Until the collapse of the Sassanid State after the division of Armenia into two, the part held by the Iranians was constantly referred to as Persarmenia. In this study, the geography referred to as Persarmenia was examined in the light of classical and modern sources until the end of the Sassanid period. The lack of political unity between the dynasties on the territory of Armenia, the struggles between the dynasties, the religious belief of the Armenians in two different religions, Christian and Mazdeist, made this division inevitable for Armenia. Armenians, who converted to Christianity, struggled to come under Roman rule. On the other hand, Armenians, who were Mazdeists, wanted to remain under Iranian rule. In some periods, we also see that Armenians struggled for independence against both the Romans and the Iranians. It is seen that the Iranians, who do not want to lose the Armenia geography to Rome, are struggling to protect the borders of the geography called Persarmenia and to reclaim the Armenia lands held by Rome. The Iranians made the region a marzban during the Sassanid period and appointed military governors to Persarmenia. However, they appointed local kings to Persarmenia in addition to military governors. The military governors appointed by the Sassanids served with the local kings. In addition to these, the Sassanids tried to secure the rights of the Armenians, who were members of the Christianity religion spreading in Persarmenia.
