Özet (EN)

After decades of independent development and limited contact, the Ukrainian and the Crimean Tatar national movements found themselves coexisting within a single political entity of the independent Ukrainian state. Following two decades of cautious cooperation underlied by tensions, the Crimean Tatar National Movement received a much more enthusiastic acceptance by the Ukrainian state after a Russian occupation and annexation of Crimea effectively forced it into exile from the peninsula. Examining the development and interaction of the Ukrainian and the Crimean Tatar nationalism, this thesis traces a shift in the Crimean Tatar – Ukrainian relations from being largely compatible with the modernist theoretical model of central – peripheral nationalism interaction to bearing a closer resemblance to the ethno-symbolist model of a communitarian-oriented cultural nationalism as accepting its stateless coexistence with a state-bearing nation without either assimilating into or fully converging with it. Assuming the Russian occupation of Crimea as a trigger event for this transformation, external communications of the Mejlis, the highest representative and executive organ of the Crimean Tatars, are analyzed to trace further development of a cultural nationalism tendency in its relation to the Ukrainian state after a full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022.
