Abstract (EN)

Complete automation has not been achieved in manufacturing processes of compositematerials due to the variations in material used and preparation of it. In this study, monitoring of the Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) process is analyzed by using two types ofsensor systems: (i) thermocouple sensors and (ii) point-voltage sensors. The ultimate goal ofthe whole project is to control the Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) process by integrating thesensors, mold, injection machine, data acquisition system, and mold filling simulations. Thisparticular study is mainly on the analysis of the two sensor systems. In the thermocouple sensors section, a mathematical model based on 1D flow and 2Dunsteady energy conservation was developed to investigate the heat transfer between resinand mold walls. The numerical solution of this model is in qualitative agreement with theresults of our experiments by showing that there are some constraints on usage ofthermocouple sensors. With the use of typical RTM materials and injection parameters, thermocouples should not be preferred over other sensor types, or they should be used with acaution due to the inadequacies investigated in this study. In the voltage sensors section, both lineal- and point-voltage sensors are investigated. Theresults of our experiments show that, although the gradually varying in-situ data of a linealsensor is more informative than a point-voltage sensor, lineal-voltage sensors might misleadthe user if the resin covers the wires at multiple sections, or the resin covers the wires startingfrom an unexpected section. Multiple point-voltage sensors were used in this study as flowmonitoring tools. The simple electrical circuit of a conventional voltage sensor was improvedto amplify the output voltage. The accuracy and reliability of this new sensor system wasverified by comparing the in-situ sensor data with the visually recorded resin flow.
