The effects of povi?done-iodine solution in epidural fibrozis in the rats

ObjectiveIn our study, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of iodopovidone on experimental rat laminectomy model in preventing the postoperative spinal epidural fibrosisMaterial and Methods24 Wistar Albino rats, that each weight was average of 230 grams were used in this study. Rats divided into three groups and each underwent laminectomy which made laminectomy, formed the control group. In first group total of 8 rats were underwent laminectomy at T8- T10. In second group total of 8 rats were underwent laminectomy at T8- T10 and % 2,5 diluted iodopovidone were wrapped over. In third group total of 8 rats were underwent laminectomy at T8- T10 and %10 iodopovidone were wrapped over. All rats sacrificed with intraperitoneally administrated thiopental sodium (Pental, Ulagay, İstanbul-Turkey) solution (100 mg/kg) after eight weeks and related vertebral colon was removed en bloc. Four test subjects were excluded from the study in post operative period because of neurological defects and infected wound area during their followings. All specimens were put into 10% formalin solution for preparation for pathological evaluation. Results were compared with statisticallyResultsWhen the groups evaluated with epidural scar tissue area, rate is epidural fibrotic area to the width of interbone defect, difference in length between epidural fibrotic area with subdural space. We found no significant difference between groups were examined by Kruskal-Wallis testConclusionOur study suggest that the iodopovidone has been ineffective on epidural scar tissue formation. Maybe, iodopovidone decreased inflamatory reaction of tissue both in acut and chronic phases. This effect of povidon iyot could be produced both by inhibiting inflammatory cell migration and decreasing epidural scar tissue formation.We believe that the effects of iodopovidone need further evaluation in future radiological and pathological studies.Key words: Epidural fibrosis, laminectomy, iodopovidone
