Evaluation of the effect of Ferula pseudalliaceae Rech. f. (hingedan- hegedan) on wound healing in an excisionally induced wound model in rats

Abstract (EN)

In recent years, increasing attention has been given to investigating the effectiveness of new wound care products containing medicinal plant extracts or their purified active compounds in wound treatment. One such plant, Ferula pseudalliaceae, is among the most characteristic species of the Hakkâri region in Turkey, growing naturally in the high-altitude mountains of the area. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Ferula pseudalliaceae on wound healing using a four-group experimental design. A total of 32 female Wistar albino rats, each weighing between 200–220 grams, were used in the research. The rats were randomly divided into four groups (n=8 per group): control group, Vaseline group, Ferula pseudalliaceae group, and dexpanthenol group. A full-thickness skin flap, 1 cm in diameter, was excised from the dorsal scapular region of all rats to create an excisional wound model, with the day of wound creation considered as day 0. No treatment was applied to the control group, while the Ferula pseudalliaceae and Vaseline groups received topical treatment once daily for 14 days. Wound areas were measured on days 0, 3, 7, and 14 by tracing onto acetate sheets, and the surface area was calculated using AutoCAD software. Tissue samples were collected on days 3, 7, and 14 for histopathological analysis. All rats were sacrificed on day 14, and both blood and tissue samples were collected for biochemical and histopathological evaluations. The Ferula pseudalliaceae group showed faster healing compared to the control and Vaseline groups, with a healing pattern similar to the dexpanthenol group. At the cellular level, parameters such as fibroblast density, re-epithelialization, and vascularization in the Ferula pseudalliaceae group were statistically similar to those in the dexpanthenol group. Biochemical analyses indicated a notable effect of Ferula pseudalliaceae on IL-6 levels and an increase in platelet counts among hematological parameters. In conclusion, Ferula pseudalliaceae was found to accelerate wound healing in a manner comparable to dexpanthenol and to have positive effects on biochemical parameters.
