Investigation of possible effects of resveratrol in pencillin-induced experimental epilepsy model in rats

Abstract (EN)
Aim: Resveratrol has been shown in many studies to reduce epileptiform activity and to have neuroprotective activity in experimental epilepsy models induced with different methods. The aim of this study was to investigate electrophysiologically effect of resveratrol on epileptiform activity in penicillin-induced experimental epilepsy model. Materials and Method: In this study, 40 Wistar-albino rats were divided into 5 groups, 8 in each group. In the control group; only 2.5 μL, i.c. saline was administered. In the penicillin group; 500 IU i.c. penicillin and no additional procedure was performed. In the resveratol group; 500 IU penicillin i.c. was applied and 20 minutes later 40 mg/kg. resveratrol i.p was administered. In the sodium valproate group; 500 IU penicillin i.c. was applied and 20 minutes later 300 mg/kg sodium valproate i.p was administered. In the interaction group; 500 IU penicillin i.c. was applied and 20 minutes later 40 mg/kg. resveratrol i.p on the right side, 300 mg/kg. sodium valproate i.p on the left side was administered. Rats were placed in the stereotaxic device after the surgical procedure and ECoG recording was taken for 180 minutes. Results: Measurement was performed as spike frequency, amplitude, spike percentage change, and amplitude percentage change. There was statistically significant difference in spike frequency and spike percentage change value in sodium valproate and interaction group. In the resveratol group, the difference between the spike frequency and the spike percentage change value was not statistically significant. There was a statistically significant difference in amplitude and amplitude percent change value in sodium valproate and interaction group. In the resveratol group, the difference in amplitude and amplitude percentage values were not statistically significant. Conclusion: In penicillin-induced experimental epilepsy model, giving resveratrol alone did not make a statistically significant difference on epileptiform activity. Giving resveratrol with sodium valproate significantly reduced epileptiform activity statistically. Key Words: Antioxidant, epilepsy, penicillin, resveratrol
