An investigation on the transformations of dome and arch ornaments of Şehzadebaşi, Süleymaniye and Selimiye Mosques

In contrast to the strength and stability of the architectural element dependent on the building material, the coloring and covering techniques used to decorate the element directly affects the updating process depending on its lifespan. Over time, a continuous deterioration-repair cycle has begun in dyed ornaments due to aging, wear and loss, or the trendiness of the period. In this context, the decoration's update cycle, which is a branch of ornamental has been transformed into complex and nonsynthesized stacks over time due to the physical maturities of the ornaments. It is known that the dome and arch ornaments of the three great mosques of Mimar Sinan, Şehzadebaşı, Süleymaniye, and Selimiye Mosques, have undergone continuous transformation since their initial construction to the present day. In the study, decoration transformations were determined by researching the sources about these three important master pieces of Ottoman Architecture with the widest span. According to all accounts, it is seen as an extremely important step towards approaching the originality of conducting holistic periodization studies in historical monuments.
