Özet (EN)

This thesis presents an in-depth analysis of self-awareness and the awakening of women as depicted in Sarah Daniels' feminist plays Ripen Our Darkness and The Devil's Gateway. Grounded in feminist theory, this study critically examines issues of oppression, liberation, and identity within the context of oppressive social norms. Daniels' portrayal of female characters highlights their journey from states of subjugation to awakening and, ultimately, to some form of freedom. The thesis explores how private struggles are intertwined with public concerns, reflecting broader societal issues such as gender power imbalances and acts of resistance. Daniels' work is situated within a broad feminist theatrical landscape, contributing to feminist discourse by challenging traditional roles of women and addressing themes of liberation and empowerment. The analysis focuses on the characters' self-awareness, examining how their relationships, interactions, and settings engage with feminist theory. This discussion is framed not only within the context of academic discourse on feminist literature and theatre but also within the larger debate on the relationship between art and social movements, and how individual transformation can resonate at a societal level.
