Use of shadows in Selma Gürbüz artwork

This study investigates the historical evolution of the significant plastic element of painting, shadow, and how it has been utilized by different artists. Shadow emerges as a fundamental element in shaping and transforming an object into a three-dimensional form. The study extensively examines artists who frequently employ shadow in Western and Turkish painting, including figures like William Bache, Picasso, Andy Warhol in Western art, and Mehmet Siyah Kalem, Burhan Doğançay, Bilal Yılmaz, and Selma Gürbüz in Turkish art. Selma Gürbüz employs the shadow element with striking figures diversified through handmade paper, black and red ink, and brush strokes. One focal point of the study is to determine how Gürbüz handles shadow in her paintings and the significance of this usage in the history of painting. Compared to other artists, it is observed that in Gürbüz's works, shadow stands out as a two-dimensional form, and figures gain depth and volume. Additionally, comparisons with contemporary artists such as Japanese artist Kumi Yamashita and American artist Kara Walker highlight Gürbüz's unique and innovative use of shadow. Within this framework, the study examines the transformation of shadow in the art of painting, elucidating the significance and unique contributions of Selma Gürbüz's works within this transformation.
