Current status of occupational health and safety in greenhouses, encountered problems and solution suggestions, example of Manavgat, Alanya, Gazipasa

In this thesis, a survey was conducted with 333 greenhouse workers in Manavgat, Alanya, and Gazipaşa districts located in the east of Antalya province to determine the current situation within the scope of Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331, and to identify possible risks. The survey conducted, towards a total of 48 questions, was administered to farmers and workers involved in greenhouse activities. General information about greenhouses, determination of education and awareness regarding occupational health and safety, whether the workers had experienced a work accident before, and questions about whether they apply sufficient precautions related to occupational health and safety while using agricultural machinery were asked to agricultural workers. In addition, based on observations and results obtained in the greenhouses, current and potential risks were identified. According to the data obtained; it was found that 55.6% of the greenhouse enterprises have a size of 4001 m2 and above, 91.59% take precautions during adverse weather conditions, 69.7% use fossil fuels for greenhouse heating, 46.54% of the greenhouse workers are aged 46 and above, 49.54% have primary education, 87.9% are greenhouse owners, 53.45% of the family members are involved in production, 53.45% work 7-9 hours per day, 75.97% have social security, 77.8% have not received agricultural labour training, 64.86% have not received occupational health and safety training, 78.68% do not have a first aid kit. It is thought that the physical conditions of the greenhouses and the awareness and knowledge level regarding worker health and safety are not sufficient among both greenhouse workers and owners. Therefore, the need for improvements in various areas to prevent potential future work accidents has emerged.
