Abstract (EN)

INVESTIGATING THE EFFECTS OF TURBULENCE AND BIT ERRORRATES IN FREE SPACE OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS(M.Sc. Thesis)Elif URASGAZ UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYDecember 2006ABSTRACTFree space optical communication systems offer several advantages overconventional radio frequency (RF) systems but, because of shorter wavelength, are subject to various atmospheric effects. The purpose of this study is toinvestigate the impact of optical scintillation and atmospherical turbulence onsystem performance in free space laser communicaion. Therefore, modeling ofoptical scintillation under weak-to-strong fluctuations associated with terrestiallinks and fade probability and bit error-rate (BER) for direct detection systemsusing a single large aperture receiver and an array of smaller receiver aperturesare examined.Science Code : 905.1.053Key Words : Atmospheric turbulence, scintillation, optical wavepropagation, laser communication, bit error-ratePage Number : 106Adviser : Asst.
