Abstract (EN)
In this study, Sextus Julius Frontinus' "De Aquaeductu Urbis Romae", which has a great importance on aqueducts, one of the important legacies of water engineering and Roman architecture during the Roman Empire, has been translated from English into Turkish. Frontinus, who was governor of the province of Britain for a period, wrote this work while dealing with the management of aqueducts in Rome. Frontinus, whom Emperor Tacitus referred to as "praetor urbanus", gained his fame with this work. Frontinus' work provides valuable information on aqueducts, both technically and architecturally, and also contains important details about the management system of aqueducts. In this translation study, it is aimed to convey the valuable information provided by Frontinus to the reader verbatim. The work contains detailed information on the construction techniques of Roman aqueducts, engineering skills, the use and management of water, which is a basic need. In addition, the work also includes geographical information about the period in which the aqueducts were built and by whom, the senate laws and emperor edicts related to water, the amount of water carried by the aqueducts, the corruption that took place and the efforts to prevent them, and the regions where the aqueducts were located. This information was written by Frontinus himself. The aim of this study is to make Frontinus' work more accessible to Turkish readers, scholars and students and to emphasise the historical importance of Roman engineering. It also provides a valuable resource for scholars interested in the history of Roman engineering and translation studies.
