Sheikhulislam Hocazade Es'ad Mehmed Efendi's work titled Faḍāil-i Cum'a (Review-text)

Faḍāʾil-i Cum'a, is a work written in Ottoman Turkish in the first quarter of the XVIIth century. The only copy of the manuscript we have is registered in the Hamidiye Collection of the Suleymaniye Library at number 539. The work contains the Friday, which is considered to be the most virtuous day of the week for Muslims, and the certain prayers performed on this special day. While the main theme has been in the process, it is seen that the style of discussion has been adopted through quotations and translations, language analysis and references from religious sources. The work is the translation of an Arabic treatise into Ottoman Turkish. However, it is not a literal translation, but has gained the identity of copyright-translation with the explanations and additions written by the author. It includes Turkish and Arabic poetry sections as well as prose sections. In this thesis, it was ascertained that the work was written by Hocazade Es 'ad Mehmed Efendi, in addition, the biographical information of the author has been found and thereafter the position of the work in Turkish Islamic Literature and faziletnāme literature has been evaluated. Furthermore, the transcribed text has been attained with the examination of the prose and poetry sections of the work in terms of content and stylistic features.
