Abstract concepts in Shei̇kh-al Islam Yahya's Divan

The topic of this thesis is the abstract concepts in Sheikh-al Islam Yahya's Divan who is one of the most important 17th century poets. The purpose of this study is detecting new semantic extensions which abstract concepts gain within the context, apart from their lexical meanings. In this way, Yayha's imagination is analyzed more elaborately; also more information about his poetic world and perspective has been obtained. The topic, the importance, the method and the resources of our study beside the poet's life and his literary aspect are treated in the introduction part of our thesis, Along with the introduction, Yahya's Divan has been read and the abstract concepts in this Divan are divided into 4 chapters as Nature, Cosmic World, Human, Religion and Mysticism and Society. The abstract concepts in these 4 chapters and the analogous concrete concept are arranged in alphabetical order, the couplets are translated into modern Turkish and they are examined in terms of the resembling and the resembled. The most artistic one among the couplets which have the same abstract-concrete concept is preferred; sometimes more than one couplets have been mentioned. When the occasion arises, literary arts have been mentioned as well. In these 4 chapters, Human is the longest one, while the shortest one is Society. Furthermore, the abstract concepts are shown in two tables as resembling-resembled and resembled. As for conclusion part, a brief evaluation has been done, the poet's poems and literary aspect are discoursed, information about how abstract and concrete concepts are processed, and statistical inferences are included as well. Our study detects semantic changes and different meanings that abstract concepts gain in the text through the way of resembling of concrete concepts to abstract concepts.
