Sayyid Sherif al-Jurjani's understanding of prophethood

Sayyid Sharif al-Jurjânî is one of the important figures of the Ash'ari kalam school, who lived in the second half of the eighth century and the beginning of the ninth century. In this direction this research, which deals with Jurjânî's understanding of prophethood, consists of an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion. In the introduction part, the information about the subject, importance, purpose, method and sources of the research is presented. In the first part; about prophethood; The concepts of prophet and messenger, prophethood in the Qur'an and hadiths, the problem of denial of prophethood, the possibility, necessity and proof of prophethood according to theological schools and philosophers, the God-givenness of prophethood, the perception of prophets by philosophers, the benefits of sending a prophet, objections to prophethood due to its essence, objections to messengership, objections to prophethood in the context of accountability, objections to prophethood because reason is considered sufficient, and objections to not sending a prophet are discussed. In addition, the concept of miracle, the conditions of the miracle, the way the miracle took place, the foundation of the prophethood with the miracle, the criticism of the miracle, the criticism of the proofs of the miracle, the approval of the miracle for the non-witnesses and the extraordinary events such as pre-prophethood miracles, wonderworks, exceptional events, unbelievers' wonderworks and betrayal are included. In the second part; Revelation and the way and nature of revelation, the concepts of inspiration, book, pages and angels, the idea of the innocence of angels, the proofs of those who reject them and the answers given to them, the matter of the superiority of the prophets over the angels, the proofs and evaluation of those who claim the superiority of angels are discussed.As a result, Jurjani's understanding of prophethood in Islamic theology has been revealed. In the third part; The prophethood of Hz. Muhammad, the concept of sinlessness, the innocence of the Hazrat Prophet, the sins attributed to the prophets and Jurjani's response to these claims, the miraculousness of the Qur'an and its criticisms, the evidences outside the Qur'an according to Jurjani, the issues related to mental, emotional, reported and other evidences are included. Hence in this study Jurjani's understanding of prophecy ıt has been revealed.
