Investigation of the effect of carazolol use on fertility before artificial insemination in cattle

Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study was to investigate whether the application of the commercial drug Simpanorm, a beta 2-adrenoreceptor blocker containing Carazolol, during artificial insemination applications routinely used in the field in cows, just before artificial insemination application has an effect on pregnancy rate. The study material consisted of 150 Holstein cows. Holstein cows were obtained from Burdur/Çeltikçi district and villages. Holstein cows with a body condition score of 2.5-3.5 were included in the study material by looking at their reproductive history and clinical examinations. Holstein cows that had at least 1 birth, had no reproductive problems, were 45-60 days postpartum and 3-4 years old were included in the study. During the study, cows coming into estrus at the first heat after calving were used. Before artificial insemination, the external clinical signs of estrus and the presence or absence of estrus discharge were checked to determine the accuracy of the external signs of estrus. Clinically, the presence of Graff's follicle in the ovary and uterine tone were confirmed by rectal palpation. After confirmation of estrus by clinical and observation signs, artificial insemination was performed at least 12 hours after the onset of estrus. Artificial insemination was performed by recto- vaginally depositing semen thawed at 37°C for 30 seconds into the corpus uterus. Holstein cows constituting the study material were divided into 3 equal groups. Group 1-study group (Carazolol) (n=50); Simpanorm (FATRO), a commercial drug containing the active ingredient Carazolol, was administered intravenously (iv) at a dose of 1 mg Carazolol/100 kg body weight just before artificial insemination. Group 2-negative control group (n=50); intravenous iv physiological saline (0.09 FTS) was administered at a dose of 2 ml/100 kg body weight (CA). 3. Group-positive control group (n=50); only artificial insemination was performed at the appropriate time without any treatment. As a result, 74% pregnancy rate was obtained from 50 cows in group-1 treated with Carazolol. This rate was 62% in the 2nd group of 50 cows treated with placebo (0.09 FTS). Pregnancy rate was 60% in 50 cows in the 3-group, which constituted the control group. These values obtained provided an increase in pregnancy rate which was not statistically different with the use of Carazolol during artificial insemination applications in Holstein cows.
