The cinema of Martin Scorsese in the context of violence and postmodernism

Violence continued its journey that started on the walls of the caves as a part of storytelling from the first days of human history with cinema, which is a branch of audiovisual art. In this study, it is aimed to look at how and for what purposes the violence and postmodern elements in Scorsese cinema shape the elements that make up the narrative and to analyze these elements from the eyes of a director who has been producing films for over fifty years. In this context, in the first part of the study, the descriptive, conceptual and theoretical framework of violence is given a place, and ideologically, by whom, how and with serving which purposes violence is constructed is elaborated. In the second part, the ideals of the Enlightenment and modernity which are the source of postmodernism are explained and then the approaches around postmodern theory are discussed. Then, in order to reveal the relationship between postmodernism and cinema, it is explored in which aspects of postmodern narratives differ or resemble from classical and modern narratives. Finally, the aspects of violence in the cinema is discussed and how this has changed in the hands of film movements, genres and auteur directors. In the last part of the study, using the grounded theory technique, which is a qualitative research technique, Scorsese cinema is analyzed in the light of the theoretical information given in the literature review. It was seen that the director did not present violence as an entertaining element in his films and built a structure with a postmodern attitude that served the purpose of the characters as an ordinary and unpretentious phenomenon that took place right next to us. Even if the films differ from one another in terms of subject, genre, character, story and plot, time and space; it was found that they were surrounded by similar themes and motifs in the context of violence and postmodernism.
