The effect of cognitive behavioral therapy based psychoeducation on substance abuse proclivity in adolescent smokers

Aim: This study was carried out to determine the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based psychoeducation on substance use tendency in adolescents who smoke. Material and method: The research is an experimental study model with pretest-posttest control group. With the Power analysis for the sample of the study, the sample size was determined as 110 smokers (55 control, 55 experiment) with 0.05 error and 0.95 confidence interval, 0.7 effect size, 0.95 universe representation power. The Descriptive Characteristics Form and the Substance Abuse Proclivity Scale (SAP) were used to collect the data. The experimental group received 8 sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy-based psychoeducation. No training program was applied to the control group. Number, percentile, mean, standard deviation, chi-square, dependent and independent groups t-test was used to evaluate the data. Results: It was determined that the adolescents in the experimental and control groups who smoked had a tendency to use substances. While the mean SAP total score of the individuals in the experimental group was 19.72±3.79 before the training, it decreased to 17.12±4.99 after the training. It was determined that the difference between the control and experimental groups in the post-test substance use tendency scale total score averages was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: CBT-based psychoeducation has been found to be effective in reducing the tendency to substance use in adolescents who smoke.
