Prof. Dr. Bülent TORUNProf. Dr. Rüştü HATİPOĞLUAccording to the recent research results, the problems due to the lack ofmicro element have grown remarkably. Amongst these, the shortage of silicon hasbeen an important problem for plants such as rice and sugarcane and animals such asrat and chicks. Not all of the plants need silicon to complete their development;however, it is known that the silicon applied in the farms and the environment of theplants can improve the productivity, and in particular, can enhance the resistance ofplants against harmful insects and plants that contain silicon in their tissues aresignificant for human and animals who consume such plants. In our country, thelevel of research conducted on silicon has not been sufficient; the reason widelyaccepted for this fact is that the silicon hasn?t been considered as one of the essentialmicro elements that the plant need. This thesis has been prepared based on theinvestigation of the works on the dynamics of silicon in the soil and on the effects ofthe silicon for plants, animals and human beings.Key Words: Silicon, silicon deficiency, health, nutritionII
