Feminist perspective of Simone de Beauvoir

Simone de Beauvoir, recognized as an important contributor to the French intellectual movement known as existentialism, asks the question ?What is a woman?? and uses the perspectives of different disciplines of biology, psychoanalysis, historical materialism, history and mythology in order to reply this question. Simone de Beauvoir, who is not contended with the mentioned disciplines, examines the community of women in their appearance, their socio-economic, cultural representations and their history. Underlying these different fields of analysis, we may find the existentialist perspective of the author which shines through in her articulation of women as Other. This Other is the opposite of man but, more importantly, the Other is the opposite of subject, i.e. the object. In any case the man is situated as the subject and considers the woman as an object, as the Other. We explore this claim in the thesis
