Using experimental typography in cinema and an example review

Prof. Bahattin ODABAŞI February 2014 - 102 pages Depending on social developments, typography has been attached to different definitions and different ways of expressions. It maintained its feature as a tool of interaction for inter-cultural communication until the present day. In contemporary world it redefines the concept-form relationship and its functionality in visual arts. Interaction of technology with graphic design made the redefinition of existing rules in design a current issue. This situation made the designer realize the significance of technology in contemporary and future perception of design. Awareness mentioned above resulted in an expansion of limited workspace and definition of new alternatives. Cinema has been accepted as the new alternative area in this thesis. Relationship of cinema and typography that dates back to the first cinema was undermined since the relationship of typography and paper was brought into prominence. The search for new forms of expression in graphic design is also a valid viewpoint for cinema. The idea of using typography in cinema created a new way of expression. This thesis consists of a total of 5 parts. The first part is focused on the problem, the purpose and the method of the thesis. The second part explores the evolution of typography in relation with meaning–shape relationship, social events, and technology by mentioning the interaction between contemporary technology and typography. The third part involves discovering how the typography transferred into motion design (kinetic design). Overall approach shows that typography did not remain limited to paper as exposition area. In this context, the situation of typography design is explained with examples of concept, shape and space. The fourth part draws upon the relationship of typography and cinema where cinema is defined as the main research area. The role of typography is presented with examples concerning the use and meaning of typography in the anatomic structure of cinema. In the last part ,that is the conclusion part, the thesis is examined with a general overview. And, in this study are mentioned existing and emerging situations.
