Documentation and structural analyses of burial textile finds from Sinop Balatlar Church

Archaeological textiles are not common findings at excavation sites, therefore researches conducted in this regard are multidisciplinary, while researches addressing this matter entirely with subdisciplines are rare. Archaeological textiles that have been found during Sinop Balatlar Church excavations constitute the title and primary resource of this thesis. In the first part of this work, the emergence and development of textile manufacturing, its technical characteristics and textiles, supporting these arguments, that were found in various archaeological excavations are addressed. In the second part, information and assessments on the preservation process immediately commenced after the first finding of archaeological textiles are presented. Building on the information given in parts one and two, Sinop Balatlar Church Excavations textiles, which are underground findings, and archaeological textile samples belonging to the cemeteries of clergy are studied. These are examined by determining both physical and chemical properties of the apparel of Eastern Orthodox clergy throughout history, plus other sources providing information regarding textile in the region and depicted works. The analysis process conducted in various steps in accordance with the materials used are studied in line with the corresponding data. This data is used to determine the underground finds of Sinop Balatlar Church Excavations textile pieces constitute which parts of the clergy apparel. The topic is supported with tables, numerous figures and graphics in order to clarify the analysis procedure.
