Sir James William Redhouse and teaching Turkish to the English

This study analyzes English Turcologist Sir James William Redhouse and his Turkish language teaching books which were prepared for he aim of teaching Turkish to the English. In this research, qualitative method was used. Data were gathered through the technique of document analysis; descriptive and content analysis were referred for further examination.Redhouse who is mostly well-known with his dictionaries, has taught Turkish language books which were written to teach Turkish to the English and names of these books are ?The Turkish Compaingner?s Vade-Mecum of Ottoman Colloqual Language? and ?A Simplified Grammar of the Ottoman Turkish Language?. In this thesis, Redhouse?s teaching Turkish to the English was presented by examining these two works.In the research, these subject classification, subjects size distribution, vocabulary teaching, sample Turkish words, Turkish morpheme teaching, dictionary, sample Turkish texts, method, target groups and readers of the books and the Language level were searched and compared.This study shows that, Redhouse?s works are significant in order to teach Turkish to the English, to become it real, his grammar-translation method, organization of his works mostly with teaching words which can be considered as a masterpiece.
