The economic analysis of agricultural farms in the Yıldız Dam irrigation area of Sivas province

The agricultural sector stands out as one of the fundamental components of the national economy and plays a critical role in ensuring economic sustainability. Increasing agricultural production and productivity is essential to meet the food needs of a growing population. Given the limited availability of arable land, it is not possible to introduce new agricultural areas, making the efficient and effective use of existing resources imperative. In this context, evaluating the structural characteristics and economic activities of agricultural enterprises with similar features is a significant necessity. The primary objective of this study is to analyze the structural characteristics and annual economic activities of agricultural enterprises located in the irrigation area of Yıldız Reservoir in the Sivas province and to identify the factors affecting the success of these enterprises. Primary data for the study were obtained through a survey method, and the sample size was determined as 105 enterprises based on a 95% confidence interval and a 10% margin of error. The analysis of survey data included the calculation of gross income, operating expenses, net income, agricultural income, and total household income of the enterprises, which formed the basis for the success analyses. According to the findings of the success analysis, enterprises with larger land and livestock assets, as well as those incorporating irrigated crops such as potatoes, sugar beets, and corn into their production patterns, were found to be more successful. Additionally, in order to evaluate the efficiency of resource use, the profitability of competing products was compared, and gross margins were determined. The research findings are expected to guide farmers in the region in their production decisions and contribute to the formulation of agricultural policies. In conclusion, this study provides significant insights into the economic structures and success factors of agricultural enterprises, contributing to the literature while offering a potential basis for regional and national agricultural policy development.
