The effect of insight of schizophrenia patients on treatment adherence

ABSTRACT The Effect of Insight of Schizophrenia Patients on Treatment Adherence Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the insight of schizophrenia patients on treatment adherence. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional study was conducted in Elazığ Mental Health and İllness Hospital between June 2017-June 2018. The universe of the research constitutes 2000 adult schizophrenia patients who were treated at Elazığ Mental Health and Diseases Hospital between. In the study, the sample of the research with the power analysis performed was determined as 300 schizophrenia. In order to collect the data, the Descriptive Form, The Morisky treatment adherence scale and the Brichwood Insight Scale were used. In the analysis of data; percentage distribution, arithmetic mean, t-test, Kruskall Wallis, variance analysis were used in independent groups. Results: The study found that most of the patients were male, middle school graduate, bachelor, non-employed, moderate level of income, no history of mental illness in the family. In the study, it was determined that 60% of patients had moderate compliance with treatment. The mean score of the patients was 3.12±1.60 in the insight. In the present study. In the present study, it was found that the schizophrenia patients's insight was low. There was a statistically positive correlation between the internal aspects of the patients and their compliance with treatment (p˂.05). Conclusion and recommendations: As the insights of patients with schizophrenia increased, it was determined that compliance with treatment increased. It may be suggested that nurses make them feel that they are not alone, that they participate in social activities, that they support them to deal with the possible problems related to the disease, and that they make attempts to increase the patient's compliance with treatment, and that they increase the level of insight.
