The relationship between the hope level of schizophrenic patients and functional recovery

Aim: This study is conducted to examine the relationship between the hope level of schizophrenic patients and functional recovery. Material and Methods: This research is descriptive and correlational. The study data were collected in Psychiatry Polyclinic of Bitlis State Hospital between December 2014 and June 2015. The population of the research consisted of all schizophrenia patients who fit the research criteria and diagnosed as schizophrenia according to DSM-V and applied to psychiatric polyclinics of the related hospital between given dates. No sampling was performed in the study population, and the study was completed with 103 patients. In data collection, 'Personal Information Form' ',' 'Herth Hope Scale' and 'Functional Remission of General Schizophrenia Scale (FROGS)' were used. In evaluating the data; mean, percentage distribution, Cronbach alpha coefficiency and Pearson Correlation analysis were used. Results: According to the research findings, the total mean score of 'Herth Hope Scale' in schizophrenic patients was found as 58.33±14.98. It was also found that the most affected sub-dimension of the Herth Hope Scale was the relationship between oneself and circle (21.84±5.02); while the least affected sub-dimension was positive readiness and expectation (17.23 ± 5.89). Total score of Functional Recovery Scale in Schizophrenia was found as 42.33 ± 13.14. It was found that the most affected sub-dimension of FROGS was social functioning (15.05 ± 4.65); while the least affected sub-dimension was vocational functioning (3.79 ± 1.75).When the relationship between the Herth Hope Scale and the The Functional Remission of General Schizophrenıa Scale is examined; it was determined that there was a significant positive correlation between total scale scores (p <0.05). Conclusion: It was found that the hope levels of schizophrenic patients were in the middle level and the functional recovery levels were low. It was found that there was a relation between the hope levels of the schizophrenic patients and functional recovery. Keywords: Functional recovery, hope, nursing, schizophrenia.
