Abstract (EN)

This study shows that zumba dance and pilates exercises in patients with schizophrenia; The aim of this study was to examine the effects on muscle strength, functional capacity, balance, quality of life, sleep and psychological symptoms in individuals and to compare the effectiveness of these two exercise approaches. Forty-five individuals between the ages of 18-65 who benefited from care and biopsychosocial services in the Private Life Path Care Center, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Family and Social Services, and who were diagnosed with schizophrenia at least one year ago according to the DSM-IV criteria, participated in our study. Participants who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into 3 groups by drawing lots. The Zumba dance (n=15) group received 45 minutes of zumba dance, the pilates exercises (n=15) group received 45 minutes of pilates exercises, and the control (n=15) group received no exercise program. The exercises were applied 3 days a week for 8 weeks. Participants; Demographic information, muscle strength (Lafayette Manual Muscle Tester), functional capacity (6-Minute Walking Test), balance (Tandem Walking Test) were recorded. quality of life (Short Form SF-36), sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and psychological symptoms (Positive-Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS)). Evaluations were repeated after 8 weeks and analyzed with the appropriate statistical program. As a result of the study, it was seen that PUKI and PANSS measurements of zumba dance and pilates exercises increased positively compared to pre-treatment scores. There was no difference in these parameters between the two groups (p>0.05). It was observed that while Zumba dance increased the measures of functional capacity, balance, social functionality (SF36) and energy- vivacity-vitality pilates exercises increased muscle strength (p<0.05). There was a decrease in the muscle strength of the control group, but no difference was observed in any of the other measurement parameters (p>0.05). When the results were evaluated, it was revealed that the zumba dance and pilates exercise approaches applied in our study can be used in terms of increasing the physical and bio-psychosocial well-being of schizophrenia patients. We think that combined training, that is, zumba dance and pilates exercise programs together, will increase the effectiveness of treatment.
