Abstract (EN)
..In some psychological disorders such as autism and schizophrenia, loss of this facial expression recognition skill may complicate patient?s daily life. Prior researches show that information technology may help to develop facial expression recognition skill by educational software and games. Aim for this study, first, to generate a reliable ?human facial expressions? digital photographs set and then, evaluate usability and efficiency via a software with some serious games inside was developed by using this set and called as ?I am learning Facial Expressions? to teach people who has deficits about recognition of facial expressions.For the set of facial expressions, 40 volunteer models which are citizen of Türkiye Republic, had their photograph taken with globally recognized facial expressions as neutral, angry, feared, happy, surprised, disgusted, and sad. With the help of a web based survey developed for this thesis, 427 volunteers have evaluated the photographs. If there was over 85% or higher consensus on an expression in a photograph, it is selected to represent that expression for the final set. Expressions under 85% are neglected considering they are not reliable. Exceptionally, we have decreased the threshold to 75% level for fear expression. At the end, we have obtained 362 photographs set, eliminated from 905 photographs of 40 models.While planning, design and development stages of this software and this photograph set, the literature and expert opinions on the subject have been used. The usability of the web site have been evaluated by eight experts and the major and minor usability problems have been detected and solved before evaluating patient. Taking into consideration of the results of usability study by five people with schizophrenia, was done made significant improvements for web site of ?I am Learning Facial Expressions". Thirty two people with schizophrenia attend the study and according to results of pretest they seperated into two groups as training and control groups. Patients of training group were asked to play serious games on the web site. After one month, the posttest was implemented for all patients. When compared the pre and post tests results, the training group results had significant difference (p=0,000; medianpretest= 16,5; medianposttest=20 ) and the control group results didn?t have any difference (p=0,052; medianpretest= 17,5; medianposttest=18 ). As a result, in this study it is found that ?I am Learning Facial Expressions? web site is useful for the people with schizophrenia and this site is impressive toll for training facial expressions.
