Abstract (EN)

Smyrna, seeing uninterrupted settlement from the antiquity to this day has been settled and developed on the Mount Pagos and its outskirts. The excellence of the city plan of Smyrna and its architecture has been awarded the title 'The first of Asia' during the reign of Roman Empire. This title is clearly meant to express the careful planning and the beauty of its architecture. Buildings in Smyrna is in harmony with the location of Smyrna and this harmony has been commented upon by researchers, travelers and scientists visiting the city. One of these comments mention that the view of Smyrna from Mount Pagos is the best scenery in the whole Levant. Smyrna is one of the least known cities among Greek and Roman cities due to its topography. Middle Age and modern city of Smyrna has been settled on top of the ancient city. Building materials, such as stone and lime, for the new city has been procured from the ancient buildings. Comments of the travellers, archaeological findings, numismatic, epigraphic and topographic info has been helpful for this study. Because the exact date of the construction of many buildings are not known and the remains of these buildings are not clear about their dates, general remarks have been made about many buildings based on the info at hand. This study is about the spread and development of religious buildings in Smyrna.
