-68- THE EFFECT OF VARIOUS BONE GRAFTS ON THE PERIODONTAL REJENERATION IN THE THERAPY OF CLASS II FURCATION DEFECTS- A HISTOLOGICAL EVALUATION The main goal of periodontal therapy is the regeneration of diseased periodontal tissues at a predictable level. Periodontal ligament and bone cells are the only cell types having potential for gaining the new connective tissue attachment between the tooth and alveoler bone. Thus, various forms of materials have been using in regerenation procedures. Since calcium sulphate (plaster of Paris) is cheap, handled easily, manipulated simply and tolerated well by soft and hard tissue, it would be beneficial in periodontal regeneration procedures in conjunction with different bone graft materials. Besides this, calcium sulphate reduces the loss of graft particles from bony defects and prevents the downgrowth of epithelium. Although recent reports have demonstrated clinic success in this material, histological data was unavailable from this reports. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of calcium sulphate with gamma irradiatied human bone grafts dehidrated with solvents, and hydroxylapatite both on the inhibition of downgrowth of gingival epithelium and the capacity in supporting the periodontal ligament and bone cell to repopulate on the root surface. For this purpose, class II furcation defects were surgically created in mandibular teeth of 6 dogs. The defect were randomly assigned in different treatment groups, i.e. gamma irradiatied human bone grafts dehidrated with solvents, hydroxylapatite, gamma irradiatied human bone grafts dehidrated with solvents in conjunction with calcium sulphate, hydroxylapatite in conjunction with calcium sulphate and flap operation.-69- Gingival recession and inflamation were observed in tine experimental groups treated with the graft materials combined with calcium sulphate. The histological results were not in accordance with the previous reports. The histomorphological and histometric results showed that the combination of the graft material with calcium sulphate has a negative effect on the bone formation. In the groups where the bone graft materials were used without combination of the formation of the new attachment and bone were found being succesfull.
