An investigation of primary school teachers' curriculum literacy levels

Teachers play an important role in society in raising a qualified, highly skilled, and well-equipped generation. For teachers to demonstrate their abilities well and to use the current curriculum effectively, their curriculum literacy levels should be efficient. When the concept of curriculum literacy is associated with the studies in the field of education, especially with the studies in the system part, it emerges as an important situation for teachers in terms of curriculum. This study, it was aimed to examine the literacy levels of teachers in the curriculum. Within the scope of the research, a total of 102 primary school teachers from seven different regions of Turkey participated in the study. Quantitative and qualitative applications were used together in the research process. The Curriculum Literacy Perception Scale developed by Keskin (2020) was used as a quantitative data collection tool in the research. The qualitative data collection tool of the research is the semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher. Quantitative findings obtained within the scope of the research were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. In this context, independent sample t-test and ANOVA test were used. The qualitative findings of the research were interpreted with the help of descriptive analysis. As a result of the research, it was determined that the opinions of the teachers did not make a significant difference in terms of gender, experience, and place of work. When the results of the interviews were examined, it was determined that the teachers could not fully define the curriculum, they partially complied with the curriculum, they took the annual plans ready, they frequently used internet resources while organizing the content, the learning processes were not included in the curriculum, and they had training needs on curriculum literacy.
